Berkshire Life Insurance Company of America has tweaked its "special limits for young professionals" disability insurance program.

The program permits students seeking medical degrees, dental degrees and other professional degrees to apply for DI coverage with limits based on their current health and their chosen professions, rather than on their current income, according to Berkshire, a unit of Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, New York.

Changes include an increased monthly income protection benefit for first-year optometrists, pharmacists and for third-year law school students; a higher special limit category for pharmacy students in their last 2 years of education; and higher catastrophic benefits for students eligible for the program's catastrophic disability benefit rider.
