Preventing identity theft

  1. Don't carry your Social Security card in your wallet.
  2. Shred banking and credit information before throwing it away.
  3. Don't leave outgoing mail in your mailbox with the flag up.
  4. Check for people who might be listening when communicating personal information.
  5. Don't print either your Social Security number or driver's license number on personal checks.
  6. Reconcile your checkbook monthly.
  7. Cancel and properly dispose of any credit cards you haven't used in the last year.
  8. When entering a web site, don't use the automatic login feature that saves your name and password.
  9. Order a copy of your credit report and scrutinize each year.
  10. Photocopy the contents of your wallet and keep in a safe place.
