A managed care company is trying an urban health plan that uses a narrow provider network to hold down premiums.
Aetna Inc., Hartford, has designed the NYC Community Plan for small employers in New York City.
The plan will rely heavily on a carefully selected, carefully trained panel of providers who can speak the many languages that New York residents speak, Aetna says.
The provider network will be small, but, in exchange, plan members will be able to get preventive care without paying co-payments, Aetna says.
Members who want to see specialists without getting referrals from their primary care physicians will have to meet an annual deductible, Aetna says.
