A managed care company is trying to persuade more plan members to avoid expensive brand-name drugs.

Humana Inc., Louisville, Ky., will be trying to get more fully insured commercial plan members to shift to generic drugs by waiving the first co-payment when members buy a generic drug through the company's RightSource mail-order pharmacy program.

Humana began phasing in the effort to use co-payment waivers to encourage generic drug earlier this year.

The new phase includes commercial plan members with tiered co-pay prescription drug plans and individuals enrolled in Humana's HumanaOne individual insurance program, Humana says.
