Fewer than 20% of employers are asking "mature employees" about the employees' future work preferences.

Researchers in the New York office of Buck Consultants and at two nonprofit groups, WorldatWork, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Corporate Voices for Working Families, Washington, have published data supporting that conclusion in a summary of results from an informal survey of 480 U.S. employers.

The researchers, who were trying to assess the possible effects of the aging of the baby boomers on the employers, found that only 58% of the participating employers said they know who in their organizations is responsible for finding out what employees know and making sure that information is passed on to other workers.

About 66% of health care employers recognize that the aging of the workforce is an important issue, but only 23% of technology sector employers recognize that the issue could prove to be a significant challenge, the researchers report.
