Women expect to care for their aging parents but are ill-prepared to do so, a new survey finds.
The survey by Securian Financial Group Inc., St. Paul, Minn., found 84% of women with a parent who had received care indicated they had made no plans until the care was actually needed.
In addition, 60% agreed that grown children should take care of their parents. If care is to be provided in their parents' home, 70% of women whose parents are both living say they are most likely to be the family member providing that care. Other family members likely to provide care in their parents' homes would be their sisters (38%) or brothers (23%).
Of women whose parents both are living, 22% said they expect to take time off work to care for aging parents, while 52% indicated they did not expect to take time off.
