Stephen Hemsley has taken over from Dr. William McGuire as chief executive officer of UnitedHealth Group Inc.
Hemsley has been the company's president since 1999.
McGuire announced a decision to give up the CEO title after an independent review team said it had found evidence of weak controls at UnitedHealth's executive compensation programs.
In other news, UnitedHealth has named William Munsell executive vice president for internal affairs and Anthony Welters executive vice president for external affairs.
Munsell has been CEO of the specialized care services unit, and Welters has been president of the AmeriChoice unit.
Richard Anderson, a UnitedHealth executive vice president, will become president of a new commercial services group, which will include specialized care services, Ingenix and Exante Financial Services, according to UnitedHealth.
Lois Quam, chief executive officer of the Ovations unit, will become president of a new public and senior markets group, which will include Ovations and AmeriChoice.
David Wichmann, president of the UnitedHealthcare managed care unit, will become president of a new individual and employer markets group, consisting primarily of UnitedHealthcare and Uniprise.
UnitedHealth also is recruiting a chief administrative officer, a chief legal officer, a chief ethics officer and new board members, the company says.
