Vermont Information Technology Leaders has hired GE Healthcare to set up a statewide consumer health information organization.

The new organization is supposed to start by establishing a chronic care information system for Vermont residents with diabetes and a medication history for all consenting patients, according to VITL, Montpelier, Vt.

VITL plans to start by making the medication histories available to emergency rooms at 2 hospitals, and then to make the histories available to all of Vermont's 15 emergencies rooms, officials say.

VITL also hopes to write a state health information technology plan by July 2007.

GE Healthcare, Little Chalfont, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom, will be managing development of the information system.

GE Healthcare, a unit of General Electric Company, Fairfield, Conn., will be getting much of the software used in the project from Orion Health Ltd., Dublin, according to VITL officials.
