Iowa Insurance Commissioner Susan Voss has blessed the efforts of a giant U.K. insurer to acquire an Iowa insurer.

Voss has issued an order approving plans by Aviva P.L.C., London, to use a subsidiary to acquire AmerUs Life Insurance Company, Des Moines, a unit of AmerUs Group Inc., for $3.1 billion in cash.

Aviva, a company with $544 billion in assets under management, has the financial resources to keep AmerUs strong and has demonstrated that it will leave AmerUs in the hands of seasoned board members and executive officers who will not jeopardize the interests of either the public or the AmerUs policyholders, Voss says in an explanation of her reasons for the order.
