Lawyer Takes Over New Jersey Department

The Garden State now has a new permanent insurance regulator.

New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, a Democrat, has administered the oath of office to Steven Goldman, the state's new commissioner of the Department of Banking and Insurance.

The New Jersey Senate voted unanimously earlier this month to confirm Goldman's appointment.

Goldman, who has been a lawyer at Sills Cummis Epstein Gross P.C., Newark, N.J., for 22 years, has specialized in representing real estate developers and in helping businesses raise money.

Goldman has a bachelor's degree in political science from Boston University, a law degree from George Washington University and a masters of law in taxation from New York University.

New Jersey Assembly Deputy Speaker Neil Cohen, D-Union, N.J., chairman of the Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee, noted in a statement about the appointment that Goldman has not been in the banking or insurance industries.

"His substantial real estate background reflects his solid working knowledge of the lending industry, which will be beneficial," Cohen said in the statement. "His managerial expertise will be critical in helping him to navigate the department through the sometimes competing interests of the banking and insurance industries."
