Employees were a little more likely to stay off the job because of pregnancy problems in 2005 than in 2004.

Researchers at UnumProvident Corp., Chattanooga, Tenn., have published a review of short-term and long-term disability causes in a report based on a review of records for 27 million group disability insureds.

The researchers found that cancer, pregnancy complications, and diseases associated with joints, muscles and connective tissue were the top 3 causes for UnumProvident long-term disability claims.

The researchers found more change on the list of causes for short-term disability claims.

"Normal pregnancy" continued to lead the STD claim cause list, but the share of STD claims caused by normal pregnancy fell to 18%, from 21%.

"Pregnancy complications" ranked fourth in 2005, causing 8% of UnumProvident STD claims.

Back trouble was one of the top 5 STD claim causes in 2004, but it fell off the 2005 top 5 list.
