Enrollment in the new health savings account programs has nearly tripled since March.

The number of HSAs purchased has climbed to 3 million, up from about 1 million, according to preliminary results of a survey sponsored by America's Health Insurance Plans, Washington.

The preliminary findings suggest that insurers are offering high-deductible, HSA-compatible health insurance policies in more markets and to a wider array of customers, AHIP says.

"HSAs are a remarkable success story," says AHIP President Karen Ignagni. "Consumers and employers have quickly embraced HSAs as a valued option."

HSAs were created by Congress in late 2003 in a section near the end of the Medicare drug bill.

Many experts are expecting President Bush to push for expansion of HSA program tax breaks Jan. 31 during his State of the Union.
