The U.S. Government Accountability Office says the U.S. Department of Labor should do more to publicize work issues related to the aging of the baby boomers.[@@]

The department already organizes efforts to warn employers about the skills shortage that may result when the boomers retire and eliminate barriers to employment of older workers.

But the issue is so important that the department should do more, by designing "a comprehensive and highly visible public awareness campaign as a way to help employers and employees plan better for the future," the GAO says in a summary of the report.

One way the government could help might be to make Medicare, rather than private group insurers, the primary health insurer for workers over age 65, GAO officials write in their report.

The GAO also notes that rules governing pension distributions also affect employment of older workers.
