Conklin began working for Guardian in 1939 and became president of the company in 1971. He added the role of chairman in 1977, and he held that title until he retired from the executive suite in 1980, Guardian says.

Although Conklin was no longer an officer at Guardian, he stayed on the company's board until 1995.

Altogether, Conklin served Guardian for more than 56 years, Guardian says.

Conklin had a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in business from Dartmouth College. He held a doctorate in economics from New York University and a doctorate in finance from Columbia University.

Conklin was an adjunct professor of finance at New York University, and he served as a president, chairman or top officer of many insurance and business groups, Guardian says.
