A foundation affiliated with CIGNA Corp. is donating $150,000 to the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation in honor of Prematurity Awareness Day, which takes place today.[@@]

CIGNA, Philadelphia, has been working closely with the March of Dimes, White Plains, N.Y., to draw attention to the plight of babies born before 37 weeks of gestation.

Premature births lead to many potentially preventable deaths, and they also generate more than $7.4 billion in hospital charges, according to CIGNA.

In addition to donating cash to the March of Dimes, CIGNA will be lighting its corporate headquarters in Philadelphia pink and blue to draw public attention to efforts to reduce the number of premature births.
