Coventry, Bethesda, Md., is reporting $133 million in net income for the third quarter on $1.7 billion in revenue, up from $87 million in net income on $1.3 billion in revenue for the third quarter of 2004.

The managed care company ended the quarter providing or administering health coverage for 2.5 million people, about as many people as it was covering a year earlier.

Commercial premium revenue per member edged up to $742.80, from $726.30 for the third quarter of 2004.

Overall profits were up because of the effects of an acquisition and successful efforts to down health care costs and administrative costs, Coventry says.
