The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation has picked Sheila Burke to be its new chairman.[@@]

Burke, who also is chief operating officer at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, succeeds Gerald Rosberg, a vice president at The Washington Post, Washington, who has been on the board for 8 years.

The Kaiser Family Foundation, Menlo Park, Calif., sponsors surveys, studies and other projects that help shape health care policy.

Burke started her career as a nurse and works as a part-time professor at the Georgetown University School of Nursing.

She also has served as the chief of staff to former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, and she has served as deputy staff director of the Senate Committee on Finance.

Before Burke went to work for the Smithsonian in 2000, she was executive dean of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
