Aetna Inc. is beefing up preventive benefits options for employers that use its high-deductible health insurance plans with health savings account programs.[@@]

The HSA law requires HSA program participants to use health coverage plans with high deductibles. Federal agencies have ruled, however, that HSA-compatible plans can cover 100% of the cost of preventive care.

Some sponsors of HSA programs prefer low-cost plans that apply high deductibles to preventive care as well as to other types of care. But Aetna, Hartford, says it will be offering a 100% drug coverage option for large and midsize employers that want to provide richer HSA plan benefits.

The drug classes eligible for "first-dollar coverage" are beta blockers and other antihypertensives; diuretics; antihyperlipidemics; antidiabetics; antiasthmatic agents; antiosteoporosis medications; anticoagulants; platelet aggregation inhibitors; pediatric vitamins with fluoride; and prenatal multivitamins with iron and folic acid.
