Aflac Incorporated is donating $1 million toward a national memorial to Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dan Amos, chairman and chief executive of Aflac, Columbus, Ga., announced the gift during the 19th annual MLK Unity Breakfast held at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center.

Congress authorized a fund-raising campaign in 1996 to build a memorial in Washington to honor the assassinated civil rights leader.

So far, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation has raised more than $33 million to construct the memorial.
