As vice president of Thompson Investment Management, LLC, in Madison, Wisconsin, John C. Thompson is clearly following in the footsteps of his father, John W. Thompson, but the similarities go even deeper. Both men studied engineering as undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and then went on to earn MBAs, the elder from the Wharton School and the younger from the University of Chicago.

After receiving his engineering degree, John C. worked for several years as a quality control consultant before joining the family firm, then known as Thompson, Plumb & Associates, as an analyst. In 1994 he became a portfolio manager and co-manager along with his father of the Thompson Plumb Growth Fund. By 1998, he was making all of the fund's trades and handling day-to-day management while the elder Thompson assumed more of an advisory role. Thompson Investment Management also handles the Thompson Plumb Bond Fund, on which John C. Thompson also serves as an analyst.
