Granum And Gammill Receive American Colleges Huebner Gold Medal

By

Two longtime leaders in the insurance industry were recently honored by The American College as winners of the Huebner Gold Medal. The recipients are Lee M. Gammill Jr., CLU, and O. Alfred Granum, CLU.

The Huebner Gold Medal, awarded annually since 1975, goes to individuals who have shown the deepest dedication to education and professionalism and have shown extraordinary support for the College.

"Both Lee and Al have been instrumental in ensuring the continued success of the College and their companies. They are well deserving of this honor," says Larry Barton, PhD, president and CEO of The American College.

"Not only did they go through the CLU program themselves, but both of them became real evangelists to encourage other agents to go and really make the investment in their career development," he says.

Even though both Gammill and Granum are retired, they continue to speak to agents in the field about the importance of professional education and the impact it had on their careers, Barton says.

Lee M. Gammill Jr., formerly the vice chairman of the board of New York Life Insurance Company, started his career as a field representative with New York Life in 1957. Shortly thereafter, Gammill took on a field sales management role and served as a general manager in northern California from 1965 to 1986. At that time he was named senior vice president of New York Lifes individual insurance and annuity divisions. By 1991 he had responsibility for the companys entire individual insurance operations.

Gammill served as the national chairman of The American Colleges 21st Century Endowment and Special Gifts Campaign. The campaign raised $32 million, exceeding its goal of $25 million with more than 600 contributors.

"Lee went around the country saying that if were going to ensure the health of this institution we need to be willing as agents to give back," says Barton. "Hes been a great champion for the college." In 1997 Gammill was named a trustee of the college.

O. Alfred Granum is the creator of "The One Card System," a tool that helps sales professionals manage and monitor their activity. "This is someone who created the model for practice management years ago," says Barton. "He understood practice management in terms of it having to be systematized, organized and practiced religiously by the agent."

The One Card System continues to be the activity management system of choice among financial sales representatives. Today, the one card system is published by The National Underwriter Company. Agents interested in learning more about the system can visit www.nuco.com.

Among his other accomplishments, Granum served as general agent of Northwestern Mutuals Chicago agency where he built one of the most successful insurance agencies in the world. He has been a frequent speaker at industry association meetings such as the Million Dollar Round Table and the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.

In 2001, with the help of Northwestern Mutual, The American College created the O. Alfred Granum Chair in Practice Management, which was named by Granums colleagues in his honor.

"This is one of the areas that has not been properly addressed by the industry," explains Barton. "Practice management is now something were very dedicated to."

In 2002, NAIFA awarded Granum the John Newton Russell Award.
