NU Online News Service, Jan. 9, 2004, 11:22 a.m. EST – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the influenza outbreak continues to kill many U.S. residents but might be winding down.[@@]

Flu and pneumonia accounted for 9.4% of all deaths reported in 122 U.S. cities during the week ending Jan. 2, and 6.2% of all visits to the CDC's "sentinel providers" during the week were for flu and flu-like illnesses.

The epidemic threshold for flu and pneumonia mortality is 8% for the 53rd week of the year, but the percentage of sentinel provider office visits that were related to flu and flu-like illnesses fell from 9.4% during the 52nd week of 2003, according to CDC figures.
