NU Online News Service, Jan. 5, 2004, 12:53 p.m. EST – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says influenza is still affecting many U.S. residents.[@@]

Flu and a related condition, pneumonia, accounted for 9% of all deaths reported in 122 U.S. cities during the week ending Dec. 27, 2003, and 9.4% of all visits to the CDC's "sentinel providers" during the week were for flu and flu-like illnesses.

The epidemic threshold for flu and pneumonia mortality is 7.9% for the 52nd week of the year, and patients with flu and flu-like illnesses have not made up such a big percentage of the sentinel providers' caseload in at least 7 years, according to CDC figures.
