NU Online News Service, Dec. 18, 2003, 3:45 p.m. EST – U.S. adults seem to be more sedentary than they were in 1995, according to results of a survey released by Harris Interactive Inc., Rochester, N.Y.[@@]

When Harris researchers interviewed 1,017 U.S. adults over the telephone in mid-October, they found that only 29% said their favorite activities involved exercise, down from 38% when Harris conducted a similar survey in 1995.

The share of participants who said their favorite activities involved little or no exercise fell to 62%, from 71%.

Harris used a definition of "exercise" that included activities such as bowling, camping, dancing, fishing, gardening, golfing, hunting, doing house work and doing yard work as well as bicycling, exercising, hiking, horseback riding, playing team sports, playing tennis, running and skiing.
