Lightning strikes and power surges can do a lot of damage to your agencys PCs, but they arent the only dangers to computers and data.

According to Don Strejeck, president of Safeware, The Insurance Agency Inc., based in Columbus, Ohio, "Human error continues to be the main cause of accidental damage.

"For example, water claims filed among students soared [in 2001], mostly due to a sharp rise in incidents where students actually spilled a liquid on a PC–coffee, water, soft drinks, you name it."

Safeware is a member of the Assurant Group, which provides insurance coverage for computers.

According to Strejeck, "most claims [for computer damage] could be prevented by using common sense." He recommends the following steps:

Dont leave your PC unattended.

Never leave your PC in your car in plain view.

Keep all liquids away from your PC.

Consider anti-theft or security devices.
