NU Online News Service, Dec. 5, 1:46 p.m. – Aetna Inc., Hartford, has helped start a national campaign to encourage primary care physicians to store vaccines safely.

The managed care company provided educational materials for the Vaccine Safe Storage Project, which is trying to improve compliance with the Centers for Disease Control vaccine storage guidelines. In addition to the educational materials, the program includes an initial survey of storage procedures, tools to support safe vaccine storage, and a follow-up survey.

Organizers have published a report on the program in the November edition of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Organizers started the program because most live vaccines can survive at room temperature for only short periods of time. Failure to adhere to handling and storage recommendations can reduce or destroy a vaccine's effectiveness, experts say.
