NU Online News Service, Dec. 3, 1:12 p.m. – Small business owners would rather respond to insurance price increases by changing carriers than by changing their coverage or the way they operate, according to a survey by the National Federation of Independent Business, Nashville, Tenn., and Wells Fargo & Company, San Francisco.

Researchers found that 34% of the participating owners said they would react to premium increases by changing carriers.

Only 30% would react by increasing deductibles; 25% by changing individual insurance agents; 18% by changing business operations to reduce claims risk; and 17% by reducing or eliminating coverage.

Researchers also found that 33% of the business owners said they carry extra life insurance to cover the cost of estate and gift taxes.
