Sebelius Wins Kansas Race For Governor

NU Online News Service, Nov. 6, 11:15 a.m. – Kathleen Sebelius has won her bid to become the next governor of Kansas. The Kansas Insurance Commissioner and former president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners was elected by a margin of 53% to 45% against Republican State Treasurer Tim Shallenburger.

Sebelius won with a total of 434,432 votes, eclipsing Shallenburger's 370,326 votes, according to the Kansas Secretary of State's office. Reform Party candidate Ted Pettibone had a total of 8,754 votes and Libertarian candidate Dennis Hawyer 7,911 votes, both garnering 1% of the vote.

Sebelius is the daughter of former Ohio Governor John Gilligan.
