CalPERS Names New CEO

NU Online News Service, Sept. 19, 12:59 p.m. – The California Public Employees' Retirement System, Sacramento, Calif., has named Fred Buenrostro Jr. to be the new CalPERS chief executive officer.

Buenrostro succeeds James Burton, who retired in August. Buenrostro was selected from a field of 14 candidates through a search process run by Heidrick & Struggles, San Francisco, an executive search firm.

Buenrostro is chief deputy director of the state Department of Personnel Administration and a member of the CalPERS Board.

Before Buenrostro joined the state personnel department in 1999, he was deputy controller of the California State Controller's Office.

Buenrostro has a bachelor's degree in business from Pepperdine University and a law degree from the University of the Pacific.
