NU Online News Service, Aug. 5, 7:15 p.m. – Regulators at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Kansas City, Mo., have decided to back the second annual Urban Insurance Advantage workshop.

The workshop, scheduled to take place Oct. 23-24 in Chicago, will give insurance industry regulators, corporate executives and others a chance to share ideas about doing business in urban markets.

Discussion topics will include demographics, multicultural marketing, agent recruitment and retention, urban investment, underwriting, credit scoring, and trends in regulation and litigation.

So far, property-casualty companies and trade groups have put far more effort into supporting the workshop, which is organized by the Urban Insurance Partners Institute, Chicago, than life insurance companies and trade groups have.

In addition to the regulators at the NAIC, institutional supporters of the workshop include the American Insurance Association, Washington; the Reinsurance Association of America, Washington; and the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, Indianapolis.

The companies on the workshop's list of supporters are all property-casualty insurers or multiline insurers best known for their property-casualty operations.

But Terri Vaughan, president of the NAIC, says the October workshop should have something for participants from all sectors of the insurance industry.

"This program can help a variety of companies–life, property/casualty, and reinsurers — learn more about serving urban markets successfully," Vaughan says.
