NU Online News Service, Aug. 5, 2:47 p.m. – The Kansas Foundation for Medical Care, and the Kansas Hospital Association, both of Topeka, Kan., have agreed to use the Milliman Care Guidelines from Milliman USA, Seattle, to evaluate the quality of care for Kansas Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.

Milliman, a major actuarial and consulting firm, has spent years trying to develop standards for care based on scientific studies that describe which approaches get the best outcomes for the lowest cost.

Some doctors question the validity of some of the standards, but federal Medicare and Medicaid regulators are now encouraging doctors and hospitals to use the standards to increase the quality and efficiency of care.

The agreement with the Kansas Hospital Association is the first of its kind between the Milliman Care Guidelines unit and a state hospital association, Milliman says.
