Anthem Reports Higher 2nd Quarter Net Income

NU Online News Service, Aug. 5, 3:45 p.m. – Anthem Inc., Indianapolis, is reporting $106 million in net income for the second quarter on $2.8 billion in revenue, up from $78 million in net income on $2.5 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2001.

The managed care company ended the quarter providing or administering major medical coverage for 8.3 million people, up from 7.8 million people a year earlier.

Average revenue for the company's 3.9 million fully insured members increased 8.6%, to $660 per member.

Anthem recently completed the acquisition of another large managed care company, Trigon Healthcare Inc., Richmond, Va., but it says it will not be including Trigon results with its own until it releases its third-quarter performance figures.
