Definity Health CEO Receives First Innovators Award

Orlando

Tony Miller, CEO of Definity Health, received the first Innovators Award at the annual meeting of the Health Insurance Association of America earlier this month.

This award, sponsored by HIAA, National Underwriter and Witt/Kieffer, recognizes the contributions of a health insurance executive whose work has lead to advancement of the industry.

Presenting the award, Donald Young, interim President of HIAA, described Millers Definity Health product as one that "allows consumers the freedom to receive the type of care that fits their personal needs from the doctor they choosewhile giving them the financial incentives that make them a stakeholder in their own health care, along with the best resources with which to make those decisions."

Miller founded Definity Health in 1998 as a new kind of health care benefit company. The group developed their healthcare benefit model on three core principles of a Personal Care Account, traditional Health Coverage, and Health Tools & Resources.

The two runners-up for the award were Randy Axelrod, senior medical director of Sentara Health Systems, and Keith Mitchell, vice president of the return-to-work program at UnumProvident Corporation.

Axelrod worked on the development of intelligence techniques to predict future trends and specific patient outcomes in managed care. Mitchell pioneered the concept of the return-to-work dividend, a measurable, step-by-step program that helps employers design policies and procedures to prevent disabilities.

Judging criteria included displaying executive innovation/leadership in the health insurance industry and impact of the innovation to the consumer, industry and company.
