NU Online News Service, Nov. 9, 3:39 p.m. – Prudential P.L.C., London, has named Clark Manning Jr. to run its U.S. operations and added him to its board.

The large British insurer has also named Manning to serve as president and chief executive officer of Jackson National Life Insurance Company, Lansing, Mich., one of its biggest U.S. units.

Manning will be the first president of Jackson National to serve on the board of the parent company, Prudential says.

The British Prudential is unrelated to Prudential Insurance Company of America, Newark, N.J.

U.S. holdings of the British Prudential include PPM America Inc., a $54 billion asset management company, as well as Jackson National. Jackson National is one of the largest sellers of life insurance, variable annuities and fixed annuities in the United States.

Manning says he hopes to increase sales by following an "aggressive strategy of expanding Jackson's distribution capabilities and product line."

Manning was the chief actuary of Jackson National from 1995 to 1998. He took over as the chief operating officer in 1998, and he has been acting as president since June.

Manning has a bachelor's degree in actuarial science and a master's degree in business from the University of Texas. He also holds the Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and member of the American Academy of Actuaries professional designations.
