"This is a reality that my family and I have had to grasp and deal with," he said. "Otherwise, I am physically fit. I intend to fight this illness. I will not yield. This is my nature and my plan."
Campbell, age 61, joined ACLI as president and CEO in January 1995. Prior to that, he had served as governor of South Carolina for eight years and as a member of Congress.
An ACLI spokesman said the board will meet soon to establish a search committee and process for selecting Campbells successor.
