Carroll A. Campbell Jr., president of the American Council of Life Insurers, Washington, will be leaving the association on Dec. 31.
In an open letter to the people of South Carolina, his home state, Campbell announced that he has been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease.
"This is a reality that my family and I have had to grasp and deal with," Campbell said. "Otherwise, I am physically fit. I intend to fight this illness. I will not yield. This is my nature and my plan."
Campbell, age 61, joined ACLI as president in January 1995. Prior to that, he had served as governor of South Carolina for eight years and as a member of Congress.
An ACLI spokesman said the board of directors will meet soon to establish a search committee and process for selecting Campbell's successor.
