NU Online News Service, Aug. 31, 1:35 p.m. – The U.S. Office of Personnel Management says it has received "quality proposals" from long-term care insurers for new Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program.

The program "WILL indeed be up and running by October 1, 2002," officials promise federal employees on the federal personnel Web site, at http://www.opm.gov/insure/ltc/

But program rules prohibit the federal personnel office from naming the companies that submitted proposals or describing the proposals, officials report.

Former President Clinton signed a law in September 2000 that gives the personnel office permission to set up a voluntary LTC insurance program for federal employees and their dependents.

The deadline for proposals was Aug. 22, and the deadline for signing a contract, or contracts, is Oct. 22.

Program officials say they should be able to meet the Oct. 22 deadline for the contract signings.
