NU Online News Service, Aug. 27, 3:55 p.m. – First Rehabilitation Insurance Company, Great Neck, N.Y., logged a lower complaint ratio than any other health carrier tracked by the New York State Department of Insurance in 2000.

The New York department calculates the complaint ratio by dividing the total number of complaints upheld against the company by the total annual premium revenue.

First Rehab collected $51 million in health care premiums in New York in 2000. It recorded a complaint ratio of 0, because the New York department rejected the only complaint filed against it.

The next four carriers had complaint ratios of 0.013 or lower.

The New York department gives the complete rankings in the latest edition of its Consumer Guide to Health Insurers, which also includes information about New York's health insurance market and recent state legislation related to health care.

The department has posted the guide on the Web, at http://www.ins.state.ny.us/hgintro.htm
