NU Online News Service, Aug. 1, 4:04 p.m. – Consumer Federation of America, Washington, says that using online insurance quote services can expose users to a number of dangers.

The sites are not necessarily useful for getting the lowest quotes, and they often produce different lowest quotes, according to the federation study, "Term Life Insurance On The Internet: An Evaluation Of Online Quotes."

Federation researchers set out to test a sample case on 25 sites.

The researchers were unable to test the case on 10 of the sites, because the sites were difficult to use, failed to serve the test state, were under construction, used languages other than English, or failed to offer quotes online.

The 15 sites that did offer quotes produced different results for the sample case. Only six of the 15 sites named the the actual low cost insurer. Five of the sites named a different low cost insurer.

Several quote sites exclude no-commission insurance companies because the organizers collect commissions on insurance sales, according to the researchers.

The federation says Term4sale.com, Compulife.com, InsWeb and Quotesmith are the best sites it tested.
