NU Online News Service, July 30, 5:31 p.m. – The Prudential Insurance Company of America, Newark, N.J., says its group disability unit will use technology to reduce use of paper files.
The unit will encourage employers, claimants and doctors to fax documents through a toll-free telephone number, straight into a document image storage system.
Documents that come in through regular mail will go to a new scanning facility in Fort Washington, Pa.
The claims-processing staff will be able to call images of the documents up on their computer screens.
Prudential has also redesigned its claim forms to make them easier to complete and easier to scan into the new imaging systems.
Prudential handles more than 1.5 million documents related to disability claims each year. The new imaging systems should help the disability unit answer questions faster, reduce processing times and keep better track of documents, the company says.
