NU Online News Service, July 10, 1:23 p.m. – Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company, Columbia, S.C., a subsidiary of UnumProvident Corp., has introduced the Medical Bridge indemnity insurance policy.

The policy, available in 30 states, provides lump-sum cash payments when the individuals insured are hospitalized for covered illnesses and injuries.

The policy also pays cash when doctors perform some types of outpatient surgery.

Policyholders can use the payments to handle expenses such as child care and transportation to the hospital as well as medical bills, Colonial Life says.

Colonial Life is selling the policy through employee-paid, payroll deduction programs at the worksite.

The policy excludes coverage for pre-existing conditions, but it is available with guaranteed-issue underwriting for employer groups that meet minimum group size and participation requirements, Colonial Life says.
