Choosing the annual SMA Managers of the Year takes several months and culminates in a live awards ceremony at the Envestnet Advisor Summit in Chicago, which this year will occur on May 7.

To begin, a committee is established that votes on nominees for the awards, and also determines how many awards will be given and whether new awards are warranted. This year the committee decided to add two new categories: an Impact award and a Strategist award.

Envestnet | PMC researchers who know both the award sectors and the individual management teams then run the numbers on the universe of strategists in each sector and apply their personal knowledge to come up with a list of finalists for each award.

Armed with those analysts' quantitative (we want to see good performance, but also consistent performance) and qualitative (How long has the lead manager been running this strategy? How important is the strategy to the asset management company?) screens, the awards committee meets to determine the winners.

On the committee this year was Envestnet | PMC's chief investment strategist, Tim Clift; Geoff Selzer, senior vice president of consulting services for Envestnet | PMC and Investment Advisor Editor-in-Chief Jamie Green.

Tough questions are asked of the research analysts, data is reviewed and clarified, and the committee members' own areas of expertise are employed.

That's when the winners are finally chosen by voice vote.
